Disable OS X Mountain Lion Dashboard

In order to save some memory on your Mac you might want to disable the OS X Dashboard. In many cases this will speed up your Mac, especially if you often use memory demanding applications.

With the introduction of Dashboard as a space, in OS X 10.7 Lion, many people consider that disabling Dashboards as a space will completely disable the Dashboard. This is actually not the case. You will still be able to see the Dashboard by pressing F4 or F12 depending on the model of your Mac.

Completely disable the OS X Dashboard from the Terminal

  1. First thing you need to do is open a Terminal Window, either from the Utilities folder in Applications or by hitting cmd + space and typing dashboard.

  2. Next to completely disable the OS X Dashboard, type defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES and hit return;

  3. Now you only need to restart the dock and you are done. Type killall Dock in the terminal window and hit return.
  4. If at a later time you want to re-enable the OS X Dashboard use the same steps as above but replace the command line in point 2 with defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO
